Happy Friday everyone! The Free Agent market is starting to loosen up just a little bit with just 17 days until pitchers and catchers report. Yesterday the Milwaukee Brewers signed not one but two outfielders. The signing of these outfielders will certainly help Milwaukee improve in 2018. The Brewers haven’t been to the playoffs since the 2011 season. It was a twofer Thursday in Milwaukee.
The Brew Crew picked up 31-year-old Free Agent Lorenzo Cain with a reportedly 5 year $80 million deal which should be finalized today. Cain is known for his defensive skills and was a member of the 2015 Kansas City Royal team that won the World Series. He also was the ALCS MVP in 2014 with the Royals.
They also acquired Christian Yelich a 27-year-old in a trade with the Miami Marlins Yelich has won both a Gold Glove and a Silver Slugger award. The Marlins receiving the four following players from Milwaukee, OF Lewis Brinson, OF Monte Harrison, INF Isan Diaz and RHP Jordan Yamamoto. After many of his teammates had been traded elsewhere Yelich was vocal about wanting to be traded and not wanting to remain in Miami. Yelich’s contract will guarantee him $44.5 million for the next four seasons.
So who else is still out there? The biggest names still available that everybody is tracking are pitchers Jake Arietta and Yu Darvish. Then there are the most notable position players J.D. Martinez and Eric Hosmer. We are less than 3 weeks away from pitchers and catchers reporting to Spring Training. It will be interesting to see if the flood gates open before Spring Training begins. Players will most certainly become more nervous about their futures the closer it gets.
